“Whisky is a drink to be savoured. Time spent enjoying the flavours on the nose are equally important as those on the palate. Raymond Davidson decided it was about time someone designed a proper whisky glass…”
– Glencairn Crystal, Ltd.
The Glencairn Glass was originally released in 2001 by a man named Raymond Davidson, the managing director at Glencairn Crystal Ltd. The glass itself was developed with the help of master blenders from the top five Scotch Whisky distilleries in Scotland. The unique shape was derived from the traditional nosing copitas used in whisky labs around Scotland at the time. The capacity of a typical Glencairn whisky glass is approximately 5.9 oz, and it is intended to hold approximately 1.7 oz of spirit (Wikipedia). While the Old Fashioned (Rocks) tumbler is the most popular vessel for enjoying whisk(e)y around the world, the Glencairn Glass is the most popular glassware among master distillers, tasters and whiskey enthusiasts alike.
I’m sure you all know by now that, one of the most powerful senses is smell, without a sense of smell, you’ll have no sense of taste. If you’ve ever participated in a whiskey tasting, you know that the host will always tell you to focus on the aroma of a whiskey; in fact, it is usually a main category when judging a sample of great Scotch or Bourbon (Nose, Taste/Palate and Finish). The Glencairn Glass was designed so that the sides of the glass curved inwards towards the top of the glass, which eventually to the smell receptors of a whiskey enthusiast’s nose, providing the consumer with a much more focused aroma for the spirit being consumed. This larger focus on the aroma lends to experiencing the full flavor profile, depth and taste of whisk(e)y. No wonder it is the most preferred glassware for whiskey connoisseurs.
