The Aviation Cocktail: A Brief History
The Aviation cocktail, a classic mixed drink known for its delicate balance of sweet and sour flavors, has a history that dates back to the early 20th century. This cocktail is believed to have been created by Hugo Ensslin, head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York City, around 1916.
The original recipe for the Aviation cocktail featured gin, maraschino liqueur, lemon juice, and a touch of crème de violette, which lent the drink its pale purple hue. Over the years, the recipe evolved and the crème de violette was sometimes omitted due to its limited availability.
Despite its popularity during the early 20th century, the Aviation cocktail fell out of favor for several decades before experiencing a resurgence in the craft cocktail scene in the early 2000s. Today, this classic cocktail continues to be appreciated by mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts alike for its unique flavor profile and historical significance in the world of mixology.
ingredients:
2 oz Fords Gin
½ oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
¼ oz Crème de Violette
¾ oz Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Maraschino Cherry
instructions:
In a shaker, mix all ingredients with ice. Shake and double strain into a chilled coupe, garnish with a single Luxardo cherry 🍒
