Some of the most creative mixologists in the southeast were in Charleston, showcasing some of the most unique cocktails I’ve ever seen. I’ll be posting some of these cocktails over the next few days. First up, Charleston’s own @schenzelwashington with his Forrest Gump inspired cocktail with a bit of peas and carrots.

What do you know about Grappa?

I’ll be honest, up until a few days ago, I didn’t know much about either, but luckily, together with my friends at hellograppa, we’re here to get to know the spirit a bit better. We’ll be talking about how to taste it neat, but also provide you with an easy you can make it with using Italian ingredients.

So what is Grappa? The Short answer is: A spirit distilled from grape marcs grown exclusively in Italy (Reg. (EU) 787/2019). In fact, Grappa is not distilled from grapes, but from Marcs. There’s so much more to it though. Grappa can be flavored/aromatic and aged/unaged. The aged variety can be aged anywhere from 12 months to 18+ months in oak barrels imparting flavors of vanilla and fruit, while also mellowing the unaged spirit.

The Spiraled Oak

I’m excited to create a custom cocktail recipe using their unique whiskies finished with a charred oak spiral. Each spiraled shaped oak stave provides a one-of-a-kind flavor profile to the whiskey and imparts an aromatic finish to every bottle. The specific oak spiral in this rye adds notes of smoke, caramel and coffee which pairs perfectly with the flavors in this Amaro and is accentuated by the coffee bitters. Check out the recipe below!
